Preparing for the Local Show

Every year we like to participate at the local Kilcoy show and this year has proven no different. The kids have been very busy for weeks preparing all of their craft, paintings and cooking ideas for this weekend. It was a great way to fill the school holiday boredom. Lenitia has been busy with her cooking and planting creations as well. I have been preparing my garden boots and unusual pot plants as well. We hope that we will offer some things that will entertain the judges and the public. The creations that the kids make can go towards their home schooling log as well, so it covers schooling as well with art, technology and design and cooking.

I have recently brought in some new poultry to add to my already large collection. I have decided to include some French Wheaten Marans. They are proving to be a placid breed of chooks that lay a truly dark terracotta egg. I thought that our Barnevelders laid dark brown eggs, but these new eggs are even more gorgeous brown. I am entering some eggs into the local show, so hopefully we will yet again get some great show results. I have won first and champion for the last three years running. Did you know that we breed poultry as well? Check out our poultry web site at www.freerangechooks.com.au . There are some great photos to look at. If your a poultry lover, we are sure you will love it!! What do you have in your backyard flock, we would love to hear from you.

Everything on the farm has been busy. We have been selling our large adult Muscovy Drakes, so that has reduced the number greatly. The females we are slowly but surely processing our way through and we love the new recipes that include duck meat. It is really a very lean meat, especially when you know exactly what goes into their diet.

The breeding season for the goats has been and gone, and fingers crossed, we will be expanding our milking goats for next season three fold. Imagine all of that gorgeous, smooth, lathery soap that is to be made. I am currently in the process of making different blends of soap. One includes hemp seed oil. It will be excellent for delicate skin. Pity the local show doesn't incorporate soaps in their judging!!

Wish us luck at the local show!!
